Affirmations

This morning on my way into work, I ran into a co-worker. We chatted about the (horrible, disgusting) weather and she mentioned that she had an affirmation that she uses on days like this "the weather is like a hug." In effect, making something positive out of a hot, humid negative.

That led me to think that I need an affirmation. I started with "Adversity leads to growth." But that sounded too Dr. Phil.

That's when I came up with "I am a strong, black woman and ain't nobody gonna keep me down!"

That was followed by a giggle fit in the (very crowded) elevator.

Oh Crash, that's just silly. Everyone knows you're not that strong.

Strong, black woman? That's more like Oprah than Star Jones.. does that mean you're also going to drop 300 pounds so your head looks like a lolly pop?

You can be a big strong black woman if it makes you happy. There are far worse things to be. And just think of the attitude you can pull off.

Star Jones? It's more like he's ripping of Kathy Griffin's last comedy show on Bravo....

What's so funny about the truth?

My mantra about humidity is "Humidity is like being sat on by a wet elephant." Not positive enough? Okay, a PRETTY wet elephant....

Oh my friggin' gawd!!! I love it. I am a strong, black woman. I will use this any time I feel oppressed by the outside world. Not to be confuzzled with, "I am a strong, black cup of coffee" or "I am a hung, black man". All of which are tastey in their own right.

Sorry, kids, but if you're thinking Oprah, Star Jones or . . . um . . . Kathy Griffin, you're a few decades too late. When I say that to myself, I'm going to be picturing one of those big-Afro, hoop earring, tight clothes, 1970 blaxploitation heroines. She's got a black eye, a little blood on her lip, two hungry kids at home and she's using a broken bottle to fight off some purse-snatching junkie.

Oh, Lawdy! I know I'm too tired...my brain just merged a few of these sayings into "I'm a pretty, strong, hung, wet, black elephant coffee lollypop."
