Malediction

Despite my absolute digust at many of the things he authored while he was known simply as Cardinal Ratzinger and my general distrust of fundamentalists of any stripe, I raise glass and toast the new pope, Benedict XVI. May your papacy be as long and fruitful as the last German pope, Victor II.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..."

Actually, if you've been following the news on his opinions and such, Benny XVI makes JP da Great look like a moderate.

Are you sure you want him to be there as long as Victor II? ;)

I think Palochi is correct, based on what I've read. This guy is a real hard-liner.

It took me a moment to realize you didn't mean you were raising toast with glass on it to Pop Ratzie!

I'm just glad that, giving his age, he doesn't have long to be sitting on the Papal throne.

The other German pope, Clement II, didn't last long either (1 year). It was either an assassination or an overdose of lead sugar - used back in the day to cure veneral diseases.

Funny how from what I heard, they purposely elected an older pope, so the length of him being pope won't be as long as the last.

No Catholic cardinal in his right mind (and who wants to keep his job) would make a statement like that, on or off the record. The whole "electing an older guy so he won't last so long" is a complete media assumption, most likely from the clowns at FOX News.
